Texas Civil Rights Project
Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) envisions a Texas where all communities thrive with dignity, justice, and without fear. Since 1990, TCRP has generated positive change to law, policy, and practice that advances and protects the civil rights of all Texans, particularly our state’s most vulnerable populations. TCRP’s overarching strategy addresses voting rights and representative democracy (Voting Rights), immigration systems that prioritize the health and safety of migrants and Texas border communities (Beyond Borders), and reducing the harms of over-criminalization and carceral systems (Criminal Legal Program).
THE CASE
-
TCRP and partner legal organizations filed a lawsuit on behalf of everyone detained at Camp East Montana (a massive tent facility at Fort Bliss in El Paso and the largest immigration detention site in the United States). People inside this detention center face severe physical abuse by guards, lack basic medical and mental health care, and are placed in solitary confinement for speaking out. After three deaths at the facility, our lawsuit asks the court to stop these dangerous and illegal conditions immediately.
